Eliminating Squirrels and Other Pests

Squirrels and bats are mammals. This makes them hard to get rid of. There are tons of products that promise to detter them - but most do not work. Some work temporarily. But think - if the product will work on them...it will work on you!

Older Homes

It is almost impossible to keep them out of older homes by 'sealing it up.' Even aluminum siding doesn't do a perfect job. The smallest crack and a bat or squirrel can get in - even if you cannot see the crack until you are close.

Amonia soaked cloths may work on squirrels for a while. Cyanne pepper is suppose to work better.

Recipe for squirrel repellent:-
1) 1 bottle (small) hot pepper sauce
2) 1 gallon water
3) water retentative (available from plant nursery) or 1 teaspoon of mild liquid detergent such as dishwashing detergent.

Poisons

Amonia will not work on bats - their urine creates pools of amonia!

Mothballs work - but they are poison. Birds do not have a sense of smell and may eat the moth balls, resulting in an attic full of dead birds.

I use warfarine - but this doesn't work everywhere as it is illegal to kill bats in some areas. I do not know if squirrels or bats eat the product. I do not know if it kills them. It isn't 100% on mice.

Commet Cleanser

This product will keep out ants. They will not cross it (or cinnamon). I have used it with relative success in areas where I don't want pests and don't care if everything is covered in a white coating of choking powder. If you want to try this - go buy a case of the powdered variety, and get ready to douce yourself!

Garlic

I grow garlic in the garden to keep out rabbits. I am not sure if it keeps out mice, squirrels or bats. Let me know if you've tried.

Bleach/Amonia

I've heard of leaving a bottle of bleach or amonia open in the area. Not sure how this works. My idea is that 'if the living area is not comfortable' they will move to a neighbors. Of course, you can always hire a professional remover - but this is a waste of money if said neighors are negligent enough to create a breeding colony in their attic that overpopulates and spreads around the neighborhood!

:D

Now for the one thing that I know works. My son's electric guitar is wonderful for removing just about any mammal from the premises - including myself. It only works for a week or so, and only until a bat swooped on my son (probably because it couldn't see) and scared him.

I don't know if the sonic things would work...but I would be inclined to buy a fog horn and try it through the breeding months - unles of course you live in suburbia.

Hope some of these ideas help you - let me know if you have any tips and advice for readers.
