The snow is giving away revealing black patches of rich soil. The protective layer of mulch has broken down over the winter and is ready to work into the soil. It is time to cover the bulbs to protect them from hungry mice and squirrels.
There are a few things to remember. Do not walk on gardens or lawn. This will damage the soil and the new growth roots.
This is the time to prevent snow mould. Do not let the melting snow piles remain on the lawn. Use a garden rake and spread the snow evenly across the lawn. Pick up unwanted debris that might retard growth and damage new shoots.
When you can walk across the yard without water appearing under your shoe it is time to aerate the law to improve water, air, and fertilizer absorbtion.
Thick lawns deter weeds and pests. Give your lawn a head start early, don't wait until it is time to fertilize.
