Open The House Up For Spring

We opened the windows today. In a big colonial like ours it only takes a few minutes for the air to flow up the chimney formed in the middle of the house. Within minutes the house was fresh smelling. This is a great way to eliminate the pollutants that build up from air fresheners, carpet cleaning solutions, and household cleansers.

Here are a few things to watch out for before you get carried away. The first is to make sure that your home is critter proof. Your garbage in the garage may not be covered. The doors may be open to let in young animals that don’t know better.

You’ll want to dust the house well. Any dust on draperies, or in the corners of the carpets, will mix with the damp air and turn into a black stain that will never come out.

Another thing you need to do is make sure that birds don’t nest in your chimney. Just send a few puffs of smoke up every few days to discourage nesting. This is the time to pull everything away from storage walls and the garage. Clean out the debris and any scraps that may be used as animal bedding.
