Old Fashioned Irises
My gardens are already poking through the ground, and in some places there are still snow drifts. I am worried that my irises will not survive. My ground cover is already 4" and needs to be dug back.
I've noticed that the gardens most of the gardens by the street have a wide strip of 'dead zone.' I never thought of this. I thought my gardens were far enough off the road to be safe - I guess not.
The irises at the side are not wild, but they are an old variety. I have to be careful around them because I am not sure if weed killer will hurt them. I know there are more beautiful irises but I like the old ones.
It even have some wild tulips. They are newer varieties that were scattered by the birds.
I am trying to transplant orchids that grow wild around here. That will be the crowning glory of a back garden. They need to be in a dry, well drained area.
Don't leave your garden too long. You want to clean out the roots and loosen the soil before the roots start to spread - especially with the older varieties of perennials.
