The Truth About Moms

My family would fall apart if I crashed, emotionally or physically. People do not believe that mom can get sick. Mom is infallible. Mom can handle anything. She never needs help. Most families do not see a problem until it is too late.

I was hospitalized last week. It made be feel sorry for the women who become dependant on drugs or alcohol. The doctors asked me some disturbing questions. It was their first line of questioning.

There was a time when I couldn't handle everything. I grew up independent, taught to stand on my own feet. I don't remember my mom doing 'mom' things like making my school lunch, or hugging me. I later learned that my mother suffered in silence for years because 'good' women didn't go to drug rehab.' Unfortunately, she couldn't go with a clear conscience, because ....Mom can't get sick. Mom can't have problems. She is infallible. She must manage everyone's life, problems, manage the house, support the family...

I am glad things have changed because when women are not free to admit they are 'human' then life is a downward spiral.
